Thinking about working at CYC? This camp counselor FAQ answers the questions applicants ask most.
What will I be responsible for?
You will be paired with another counselor and together be responsible for a cabin of 12 campers. First and foremost, you are responsible for camper safety (physical and emotional) and happiness. You’ll take campers through activities, interact with them at meals and throughout the day, help them make friends, and assist with anything that comes up. You will teach three activities per day to mixed age and gender groups, take part in all-camp activities and counselor skits, and lead songs and nightly devotions.
What skills do I need?
More than anything, you need a strong desire to care for children. You need to be patient, understanding, have a sense of humor, and want to see campers enjoy their time at camp. We teach you everything else at training.
What hours will I work?
During the camp season you work from noon on Sunday until 4:00 pm on Friday. During the week you have an hour off each morning and afternoon, plus one night off per week. From Friday evening until Sunday morning your time is your own – stay at camp or leave for the weekend.
How much do I get paid?
Pay varies by position and experience. First-year counselors generally earn $275/week plus room and board for the summer.
I’m not Catholic – can I still work at CYC?
Yes! All Christians are welcome. Non-Catholic staff need to be willing to engage with all Catholic traditions, and to advocate for and submit to Catholic teachings.
