FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions – Parents

What training does the staff undergo?

CYC staff goes through 50 hours of on-site training. This training covers a variety of topics including how to teach activities, manage behavior, deal with homesickness, resolve conflicts, prevent child abuse, and handle many other camp-specific areas. Staff is also Red Cross CPR and First Aid certified. Prior to training, CYC staff members are carefully screened from a large pool of applicants and interviewed. A reference and background check is completed for each staff.

What happens if my child is sick, injured, or homesick?

CYC has a trained healthcare professional on staff each week who is available around the clock in case a camper is sick or injured. He/She is in close contact with the staff and Camp Director. In case of an emergency, the McGregor Clinic is just 15 minutes away and the Aitkin Hospital is 30 minutes away. If your child is ill, injured, or homesick, the Camp Nurse or the Camp Director will call you. At CYC, we partner with you to be sure your child is safe, healthy, and happy.

Can I contact my child while he/she is at camp?

You can send your child emails through your online registration account (please see your parent handbook for further instructions) or letter through the mail, both of which are distributed each day. Campers are able to send postal letters, but are not able to email. Phone calls are limited unless a camper is sick or if there is a problem.

My child has allergies, medications, or other special health needs. Can CYC accommodate him/her?

CYC will work with families on a case by case basis to determine if we are the right camp for your child. We regularly have campers who take medications or have allergies. Our Camp Nurse and staff can handle most situations, but if you are concerned, please call the office prior to registering your child and speak with the Camp Director.

How much money should I put in my camper’s camp store account?

Parents usually deposit $5-50 in their camper’s store account. T-shirts usually cost around $20, sweatshirts $30, water bottles $10, snacks $1-3. There is a chance for parents to visit the camp store on the last day which is an excellent time to equip the whole family with CYC gear. Each child will go home with a tie-dye shirt with Catholic Youth Camp on it! Please see the parent handbook for more information.

Can I request my child to be in the same cabin as his/her friend?

Yes! Buddy requests can be made on the registration form. If you have questions or concerns after registration, please feel free to contact the office.

"I love how every night we do devotions. And Sunset beach is the best place to hang out, and our cabins are very awesome too!!! Sweeney is very fun. We always have the dance party there, which is my favorite thing. They always have fun activities and we always like doing them." - Isabel
