Flood Update
Summer is off to an exciting start! Staff training was fantastic and our first week with campers was wonderful! The 65th summer of CYC is going to be the best yet.
Of course it wouldn’t be CYC without some good stories Please check out our blog- www.cycamp.org/blog and wkeep up with us on facebook http://www.facebook.com/CYCMN.
As you’ve probably seen in the news Northern MN is struggling with flooding and unfortunately Big Sandy Lake is a reservoir that is connected to the Mississippi and so the water level is HIGH (and not able to be let down) because of the flooding South of us. We even made the national news- http://www.cnn.com/2012/06/22/us/midwest-flooding/index.html?hpt=us_c2 . And as of Friday Aitkin County declared a local state of emergency- http://www.co.aitkin.mn.us/News-Release/Floodupdate2-062212.pdf
We are expecting 3 more feet of water until it crests on June 30. We have lost the road into camp (see photo below) and Hwy 65 into McGregor is covered by water and will probably be impassable by tomorrow. We have canceled camp for the week and the majority of the staff left camp before we lost the road. Those of us who are still here are monitoring the water level and making sure nothing floats away. We are hopeful that the third session of camp which begins on July 1 will be able to go on as scheduled but there will be some clean up once the water goes down. We will continue to update everyone on the water level and flooding conditions at CYC.
Please take a look at some photos of camp- https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10150894551311134.414621.27906956133&type=1&l=240eb0fc40
